Did he loose a dare or something? As for the comment "still a 1.4 on the log book so cheap tax and insurance", I reckon the old bill should pick up on these types of advert and get straight round there. If the plank hit me in that thing the resulting lack of insurance would see me in the nick for GBH after I'd finished with the twart!

For years in Ireland it was quite easy to have a car that was one thing on the book and another in reality... I was often in 2.0/1.0 escorts in my youth, and owned a 1.3/1.6 orion, but it was always kept quite, sadly the yoof of today think it is ok to advertise openly the fact that their car is illegal, to the point that there is now a crackdown, which unfortunately just makes it a bit more paperworky to do a genuine engine swap... but then again when you see the bodykits they are putting on poor cars, there is no obvious signs of intelligence there...

If anyone can remember the 70's it was probably the same over here. My dad had a Viva van that was powered by his mates crumpled VX4/90. He had a Moggie with a Fiat Twinny too and I seem to remember him going on about a Fiat 124 Special T (the one they sold to Lada) with a 2 litre twinny and a brace of carbs. Then again all of his collisions were with street furniture including a lamp-post that was hit so hard it bent the diff on his Cortina

I think its a good thing that all mods must be declared but I think the cops should be given training on how to spot under the counter engine swaps because when its in the car could you spot the difference between a 1.4 and 2.0 zetec? The insurance company backing out after a claim will be too late for the poor sod they crushed with their own engine.

nothing wrong with Fiat/Lancia twin cams, or Alfa's similar lumps,
my old fiat 131 sport 2.0 TC used to waste RS2000's, for a while in the 80's the twink was the engine of choice for alot of conversions like the moggy, probably because the fiat shell had rusted away just leaving the drivetrain, so you didnt have to strip it, the shell just fell away!!

I've done a head gasket on an XM TD, I wouldn't go near one for a tenth of the price!

I remember the first XM I ever saw, it could only have been about three months old, I really was impressed with the way it looked, not so impressed when owner hopped in and drove off on three cylinders...

I quite like 'bed goes up bed goes down' Citroens for some reason. I'd have a BX or ZX 16v if I could find one (Mi16 lump is the primary reason) or one of the big querky things like a CX or C6. My dad had a CX Family when I was a kid. He bought it cheap because the suspension brakes and steering wouldn't work and found the £1.50 pipe that had burst. It was enormous and slow but as far as a 7 year old me was concerned it was a like a spaceship inside and you could drive over a ploughed field and not notice. I used to call it the flying matress.

As for the MR2, it has to be the best looking Jap car ever built but for some reason people think they can make it better and usually fail. Its like putting fake boobs on Pippa Middleton

Only a 1.4 on the log book "like innit" apart from that and being a vauxhall there's potential here.

Practical Performance Car (PPC) magazine, a monthly publication aimed at real car enthusiasts, with real-world cars. At PPC we pride ourselves in providing the most entertaining, informative and inspiring features for petrolheads everywhere. Each month we feature an eclectic mix of affordable performance cars, great driving adventures and world-class technical features for the DIY tuner.

Everyone who works on the magazine is a dyed-in-the-wool car enthusiast and this is reflected in the cars we drive and the topics we write about. Whether it be fast road, track-day or grass roots motorsport you’ll find it in PPC. Our editorial team is headed up by well known editor Will Holman. Will has a deserved reputation for his ’stick a V8 under the bonnet’ attitude to life and has had (and crashed/ had stolen/ rusted away) enough cars to fill a monthly magazine on his own. His editorial team is stacked with experience with the likes of Dave Walker (speciality engine management), of the sadly-missed Car and Car Conversions magazine, David Vizard, the legendary engine tuning guru, and Kevin Leaper (speciality buying cars in pubs) – ex technical editor of Practical Classics. Have a look at the Staff Cars and features to give you a flavour of PPC but for the real thing get along to your local WH Smiths or independent newsagent. PPC is on sale on the last Thursday of every month.
