Looking for something a bit different

Hey there :)
Just discovered PPC and loving what im reading so far!
Ive been looking for a new car for a while and being 19 and doing an engineering apprenticeship, my eyes are on big displacement but my pockets are saying no :/
I was wondering if anyone could offer up any ideas as to what would be a good choice for a reasonably classic yet reliable and insurance friendly performance car? budget of about £3000 +/- £500

Something that can turn heads and make people think "What the F**k has he bought that for"

Hello!!!
Welcome to the forum

I have a suggestion, try buying a Mercedes W123 saloon, they are still reasonable money for a good solid car, and they are pretty cool.

If insurance is going to be an issue, you could always buy a basic carb'd 200 model, and swap in a bigger Merc engine in the future, with 70's & 80's Merc's having so many interchangeable parts doing almost any mods is a straight forward, virtually bolt-in job.

For instance, you could start off with a 200, then swap in a 280E engine in a few days, then when funds allow drop in a V8 out of a W126 500 or 560 S class.

Spax do a nice lowering kit that includes springs and shocks, and almost any model Mercedes wheel will fit.

They are but like a tank too.

And I've noticed that unlike the early BMW 3 series, the insurance has stayed reasonable on them.

Anyway, that's my suggestion, hope it helps.

Cheers for the advice,
I think if I was gonna go for a 1.8l+ engine a LPG conversion would definatly be on the books but theres only 2 LPG ready stations round this area :/

I would love a 190E 1.8/2.0, insurance isnt killer on them either :D

Whether it be fast road, track-day or grass roots motorsport you’ll find it in PPC. Our editorial team is headed up by well known editor Will Holman. Will has a deserved reputation for his ’stick a V8 under the bonnet’ attitude to life and has had (and crashed/ had stolen/ rusted away) enough cars to fill a monthly magazine on his own. His editorial team is stacked with experience with the likes of Dave Walker (speciality engine management), of the sadly-missed Car and Car Conversions magazine, David Vizard, the legendary engine tuning guru, and Kevin Leaper (speciality buying cars in pubs) – ex technical editor of Practical Classics. Have a look at the Staff Cars and features to give you a flavour of PPC but for the real thing get along to your local WH Smiths or independent newsagent. PPC is on sale on the last Thursday of every month.
