If you could get the VTR or AXs weight down to sub-800kg they would be very good too especially with a lot more horsies.
The best option though is probably to pick one and work hard on it, labour is free, everything else costs and is limited by the £999.

You can get the new mini superchargers, eaton type, for about 120 quid, but they are bigger so harder to fit in an ax engine bay, ive seen pics of a mini supercharger fitted onto a saxo on the web.
