A mate is breaking an 80 tdi was thinking as its front to back would it fit in the mx5 bay and what would you do for a gearbox ?

If you're going to ruin the car you may as well use a crap box. Any of the LT series will do. ;)

If you must have diesel power for your MX5 how about a BMW 318TD with a Holset turbo and front mounted intercooler?

As it's a car engine rather than a tractor unit it would suit the platform better, less faffing about and spares would be available more readily.

Yes I know its sacrelidge but the vag tdi lump is one of the best and reason I said audi was they go front to back .
Some guys have put a bongo diesel in one .

I must say the Bongo WTL-t2.5 is very good. Also fitted to Ford Rangers but if I was to find a derv engine for a car conversion, it would be the Jeep 2.8crd.

VAG Tdi? When you said "80 Tdi" in the first post I thought you were on about a stubby Land Rover. :crazy:

You'd need to keep the transaxle box and swap bellhousings and bits over to the Mazda box. At lest the BMW is already a rear wheel drive platform and therefore less of a pain in the cheeks. ;)

Pumas are hateful little things, but I do like the idea behind it.

Not sure of I should like the MX5 based thing or not. Is it trying to be a Ferrari?

I love that puma. Well I would if it had a MAHOOSIVE turbo on it. Or a supercharger. An MX5 with one, well maybe, the original engine isn't a lightweight so might not upset the balance and turbo'd MX5s exist so no one can complain about it having to be NA.

its in the bath in PPC, get some beers down your neck, get on ebay and make it happen! :D

Unfortunately... they weigh approx 500kg, and make the 300kg jag v12 look like a paperweight! But.. that does just about fit in an mx5 ;)

The vw TD engine is an awesome piece of machinery - shove the right pump, injectors, and turbo on, and you'll see an easy 250bhp+
