Craziest Midget Engine Options?

wild car/engine combo's? grab a badgers milk and a jaffa then tell the gang here

Postby Renrut » Wed Apr 18, 2012 9:15 am

I've just had a look at how much the bits for a Black Current 3 were - motor = $10K, batteries is a 22kWh battery pack. That's comparable to the Leaf's 26kWhr pack but Black Current would flatten that in one run if it could get the energy out quick enough. They're £8K btw.

Doesn't seem like a cheap option anymore

However I do wonder what could be made on a tight budget and using a bit of the grey matter. I need to think on this.

But do you want a midget that once driven a 1/4 mile has to be pushed home again, no backroad fun...

If Mr Boot is binning the Peugeot V6 in favor of an Audi one you can borrow his bell housing and fit a 1.9 turbo diesel form a 406. With a few choice parts from Alutec and Holset it would fly and leave a black trail behind. ;)

If came to mind because Kev (van of death) had a 406 TD for £250 if anyone wants it.

That was kind of my point - its hardly efficient if it can't cover any ground. Hence I was thinking about some sort of electric/petrol hybrid. First thought was a home made gas turbine but then I realised I'd have to make it. Either way it would be about the most expensive build I could do.

I have just realised one option thats possible - the Nissan Serena! It used an NA SR20De engine, 5 speed box and a live axle rear. They also came with a 2.3 LDV diesel. It would be pretty shit and weigh more than the old engine. This would be nice though:

You could buy a complete 200SX with half a J-Tuners tissue list under the bonnet for that money, a much more cost effective way of making 250-300bhp.

The Daihatsu sounds like a good idea, but how about a Volvo 5 pot? Too heavy?

Having seen the photos I posted earlier, a straight six is a bit long for the car even if its light enough. Unless there are some tiny straight 6s out there from a weird bike or some JDM oddball, then it would be tempting.

V4 out of a Pan European? Shaft drive, narrow angle and very compact without the usual bike maintenance upkeep. Might be a bit tall though.

For the trouble of getting a VR6 the right way round and on a box capable of dealing with it you could get an XEV6 or Ecotec from an Omega but that would be a sensible option.

Pannys are okay but you really want a Shaun at BigCC Racing to build you one of his supercharged Yamaha V-Max motors. Aren't Triumph sprockets (Rocket III) cheap enough for the kit car boys yet?

I just thought the VR6 is a better option in the Midget, seeing as its narrower than a conventional V6, and shorter than a straight 6.
So, it's the best of both worlds, as far as the Midget's engine bay is concerned.

See Frank that's sensible again. :) Space isn't an issue when you have a grinder. ;)

I'm offering Renrut, some fairly sensible suggestions, if it was me, I've got a 19 litre air cooled V12 diesel engine sat in my shed... :D

His editorial team is stacked with experience with the likes of Dave Walker (speciality engine management), of the sadly-missed Car and Car Conversions magazine, David Vizard, the legendary engine tuning guru, and Kevin Leaper (speciality buying cars in pubs) – ex technical editor of Practical Classics.
