I am surprised that nobody has suggested a Tiller to fix the steering problem...

Would make a darn good chauffeur for sure, and having a horde, (that's horde), following you would guarantee victory in any roadrage incident...

So remember why I went to all the trouble of taking a perfectly good Atlas axle out of the Turd and making a De-dion set-up? Yup, so I could use the XR4X4 LSD I bought off Ebay a few years ago.
So today, I managed to drag my sorry arse off my deathbed to take off the diff cover to weld up a little hole that accidentally occurred. Which is when I noticed the lack of LSD. Its an open diff.
I siad to Jaffa at Mallory that it didn't feel very LSD-like and now I know why! Bugger.

Here's what I'm looking at..

So there's me thinking I have an open diff. However, it seems that Sierras never had proper LSDs. What they had was a viscous pack behind the crown wheel and an open diff. So I DO have what FoMoCo call a LSD.
Anyhoo, here's my holey diff cover ready to be welded...

That makes sense because you use normal gear oil in these LSD's. I knew they were different to a normal LSD but never had one open so that's where my knowledge ends.

Just weld it up closed whilst you've got the welding kit out, no need for limiting the slip on something as light as the magenta and it'd drift a treat too. Loved my sierra with a welded diff.

I had a welded diff in an Atlas axle and unless you dipped the clutch and gave it a bootfull, it just understeered.

Went to the gym again this morning just in case I get to wrestle the Turd on Friday. I couldn't find a suitable excerise to simulate a 'Turd workout' :( Luckily, on the way home I spotted a field full of livestock  I hopped over the fence and chose the biggest angriest looking BULL  grabbed it by the horns and 'steered' it round the field for 30secs at a time  That should do it!!

If memory serves a change of oil tightens them up a bit...

I've never tried changing the oil in a bull.

The viscous unit is sealed, so unaffected by whatever oil you put in the diff (or bull  ).
Apparently they can slacken with age / use, but can be re-conned / tightened up to suit your application.

Practical Performance Car (PPC) magazine, a monthly publication aimed at real car enthusiasts, with real-world cars. At PPC we pride ourselves in providing the most entertaining, informative and inspiring features for petrolheads everywhere. Each month we feature an eclectic mix of affordable performance cars, great driving adventures and world-class technical features for the DIY tuner.

Everyone who works on the magazine is a dyed-in-the-wool car enthusiast and this is reflected in the cars we drive and the topics we write about. Whether it be fast road, track-day or grass roots motorsport you’ll find it in PPC. Our editorial team is headed up by well known editor Will Holman. Will has a deserved reputation for his ’stick a V8 under the bonnet’ attitude to life and has had (and crashed/ had stolen/ rusted away) enough cars to fill a monthly magazine on his own. His editorial team is stacked with experience with the likes of Dave Walker (speciality engine management), of the sadly-missed Car and Car Conversions magazine, David Vizard, the legendary engine tuning guru, and Kevin Leaper (speciality buying cars in pubs) – ex technical editor of Practical Classics. Have a look at the Staff Cars and features to give you a flavour of PPC but for the real thing get along to your local WH Smiths or independent newsagent. PPC is on sale on the last Thursday of every month.
