Project Cunning Plan, '82 Merc 280E

what do you have an how are you doing it? Cars or trick bits, put your shots up here.

Evening all,

I've had I bit of time on the Merc today, it now has the plastic windows fitted into the rear doors and passenger door.
I've still got to refit the driver's door, so I'll get the window fitted before it goes back on.
The passenger side doors are now finished.
Here's a picture of the doors now:

I've got the fuel pump working again today, I wasn't faulty, the relay was sticking.
All I've got to do now is put some fresh petrol in and give her a go (fingers crossed...)

More soon...

Yep, it'll be there, providing nothing terrible happens, wether or not I get it on track is another matter.
I think I'll be out on track, but if I'm not 100% on everything, it'll just be parked in the £999 area.

I've had a couple of hours on the car tonight...

It's now got a full set of doors and windows!!!!

I thought I'd show you a few pics of the work I've done on the driver's door tonight;

Here it is before:
Image

Then my friendly cordless angry grinder gets to work...
Image

Hey Presto!!! A hole appears!!
Image

Then I shaved off the sound deadening with my multi tool, with the scraper attachment fitted...
Image

Then I fitted an off cut of 1mm ali sheet using some self drilling screws, and fitted a chain to the latch, so I can get out of the door.
Image

Job jobbed!!

I then set about fitting the harness...
I've mounted the shoulder strap eye bolts high up on the rear seat panel, to keep them as level as possible.
I've had to compromise with the lap straps, the outer strap is using the factory captive nut, but I've moved the inner strap, lower down the transmission tunnel than the original captive nut, but I couldn't move it any further forward, because the centre bearing and handbrake cable mounts are in the way of moving it forward.
So, they are level height, but not opposite each other, but I think they'll be ok.
Here's some pictures, I think it's looking pretty business like in there now...
Image

...and here's the eye bolts I was talking about...

More soon

I've been over to the car tonight for an hour, it now has more boot space now I've took the petrol tank out. I've rinsed out the tank tonight, seeing as the old petrol was a lovely shade of brown. :wtf:
I'm going to refit the tank tomorrow, and replace the rubber hoses, non of them are leaking, but I'm not too impressed with the look of them, so I thought I'd replace them while it's all apart, rather have to do it later. Better safe than sorry and all that.

I've also fitted the interior pull chain to the passenger door, so that's now finished.

So, my jobs tomorrow and Thursday are;
1) refit the petrol tank and new hoses.
2) put fresh petrol in, and start her up!!!
3) finish the brakes.
4) fit the springs and shocks.
5) fit the front wings.
6) get the wheels back on.
7) fit the passenger seat.
(it doesn't sound much when you write it down!!)

Cheers Frank

Well, I can tick number 1 off the list, the tank is now refitted.
Fitting the new hoses was a nightmare, seeing as they are all very short, and all above the rear axle. :wtf:
It didn't help that I was laid under the car, on the trailer getting absolutely soaked!! I spent about 2 hours laid in a puddle. :(
I put the last gallon of petrol in the tank and just gave it a quick spin over, just to check the pump was kicking in ok, and see if I could see any leaks.
The battery was a bit low, but so far it's all lolling good under there.

Here's a picture of my work area today...

I'm going to move the trailer tomorrow, and get the pop up marquee over it, so I can get cracked on a bit tomorrow.

(I think the exhaust might need looking at before Mallory)
I've also tried my PPC bar, erm... I mean pop up marquee/garage.
Image

I've got the front springs and shocks fitted too.
Image

Anyway, I've finished my tea, so I best try and get a bit more done...

Eh?
If I put them the other way the grooves would scoop the brake gases into the centre of the disc, instead of pushing them from the centre out.
Or, have I got the principle of it all wrong?

(edit: to clarify, the front of the car is to the left of the picture, so the disc will be turning anti clockwise.)

TBH Frank, it doesn't make much difference. The usual accepted way is to have the slot leading from the outside when rotating normally I believe. I wouldn't bother changing 'em mate just do the backs the same :D

His editorial team is stacked with experience with the likes of Dave Walker (speciality engine management), of the sadly-missed Car and Car Conversions magazine, David Vizard, the legendary engine tuning guru, and Kevin Leaper (speciality buying cars in pubs) – ex technical editor of Practical Classics.
