An extra part to the competition (show n shine????)

Its back for another year, who or what will take the crown this year, at a new venue SANTA POD

Postby tommi » Wed Sep 08, 2010 1:07 pm

I know that there are 2 parts to this competition as in the drag strip and the handling course.

Is there any chance we can include a little show n shine contest. more show than shine i imagine but a whole part of the raceing and competing part is having a car that looks good aswell as peforms.

E.g can there be an official car of the day even if its not the fastest. would be good to see some nice rattle can spray jobs :)

I was thinking sub-catagories for the competition.

The.....

"Hills are Alive Award" for best sounding car.
"Zimmer Award" for oldest car + driver conbination.
"Golden Duct-tape Award" for best bodge.
"Cones Hotline Award" for the best whipe out on the handling course.
"Buckled Armco Award" for most spirited drive.
"Jaffa Cake Award" for most improved driver throughout the day.

....and so on. ;)

Show and shine could be interesting but its not the point.

Show and shine just dosent work with sub £1k shitters.

A looks least like a death trap award could be an interesting contest though

wasnt really thinking show and shine as in polishing but more along the lines of best looking car overall. after reading all the build threads most people are painting there wheels or repairing bodywork to make it look pretty so the best overall combination

as for prizes, we dont need trophies for the awards, how about certificates taped to a bottle of stella ! :)

As if things arn't already tight enough on time (still no mot!), now I've got to wash the damn car too.

On a different note but also looks related, any advice on chopping springs? Preferably the quickest easiest method.

Top tips for spring cutting.

1/ Whatever the car try to get Diesel springs (because the diesel engines are usually heavier the springs will be stiffer).

2/ Using the bottom of the spring as a guide mark them where you want to cut. Double check with a micrometer and appling the well known formulae relating to spring rating, lengh, weight, mass transferance, centrifical force, rebound, offset and about two hundred other variables.

3/ Then think sod all that and take a grinder to them.

4/ Make a flat edge at the bottom of the spring so it sits in the shock leg.

5/ Re-fit to the car and if it looks right it probably is.

His editorial team is stacked with experience with the likes of Dave Walker (speciality engine management), of the sadly-missed Car and Car Conversions magazine, David Vizard, the legendary engine tuning guru, and Kevin Leaper (speciality buying cars in pubs) – ex technical editor of Practical Classics.
