i remeber trying to do a head gasket on a 200,000 mile mr2 once, it would of been quicker for me to drop the engine out the back then the back ache it caused me. i hope you get the engine fully sorted before you stick it in the car because i bet its tight working on it after

Good progress made this weekend. Old 4 pot out of car and collected by new owner in exchange for 250 beer vouchers  Started stripping the V6. Took me about 4hrs to get one head off!! :wtf: Loads of wiring, pipework etc etc (and I was a bit hungover  )Certainly wouldn't want to do this when it was in a car. Anyway, its looking good inside - all nice and clean and the bores are perfect :D However, I think it's safe to say that the headgasket had gone-

I'm fairly sure this engine has done high miles but it's impressively clean inside, so looks like it may have had a pampered life-

No sign of bore wear either-

Head's nice and clean too, looks spot on. :D
Yes it was running hot, that's why it ended up in the scrap yard. They'd gutted the 'stat to try and cure it but gave up after that. Looks like I've found the issue though.

HGF often leaves shiney piston crowns due to the steam cleaning they get!

Jeeeeesus, TTW don't mess about, that V6 screams torque, and in an MR2! it'll shift alright and handle like a go-kart!
Just upped the stakes boys, and the layzee auto probably never seen 5k,rpm!

The engine looks in very good shape, esp with the HG failure sorting the overheating problem, dead handy, and i wouldnt want to work on that bloody great thing in situ in an MR2, contortionist i'm not!

Oh it handles alright, had some great fun at the 1/2 dozen or so track events we've done this year. Been a laugh when people kept coming up to tell us our Turbo went well, when it's an N/A and a £250 one at that
It'll go well with the V6 in but realistically the most it's going to have is 230bhp, if I do an amazing job of the head porting (which is unlikely!! ) It would probably have won this year with the V6 (instead of 2nd) but I think the competition will be much hotter next year due to the good and early date announcement. It's not been built to win, it'll be off to the 'Ring and many other tracks hopefully before it arrives at the Pod. We're only keeping it under budget cos I like this 'competition' (and most of the competitors  ) so much. :D

Likewise, thats why i'm sorting the old G60 lump instead of dropping a 1.8T into the old mk2!

230/240bhp in the MR2 with no lag, bags of torque and Kart-like handling works for me mate, and i applaud your commitment to the cause!
I told steve today in work that i could've sold him my roadcar for, say, £1500, bought it back for 900 quid, won the comp and made 600 notes off his crap mathematics!!!! LMFAO!

Ha ha, mark, but we could've saved alot of bother!!!
i rate this, it came 2nd in the handling and i reckon it'll be 1-1.5secs quicker down the strip with this V6, TTW are in with a shout i reckon!

Swapping ends is more of a problem in MR2s in the wet, believe me I know!! :o It's a fine handling car especially in the dry and it's hard to predict the weather for Sept 2011 at the mo' too mate

Practical Performance Car (PPC) magazine, a monthly publication aimed at real car enthusiasts, with real-world cars. At PPC we pride ourselves in providing the most entertaining, informative and inspiring features for petrolheads everywhere. Each month we feature an eclectic mix of affordable performance cars, great driving adventures and world-class technical features for the DIY tuner.

Everyone who works on the magazine is a dyed-in-the-wool car enthusiast and this is reflected in the cars we drive and the topics we write about. Whether it be fast road, track-day or grass roots motorsport you’ll find it in PPC. Our editorial team is headed up by well known editor Will Holman. Will has a deserved reputation for his ’stick a V8 under the bonnet’ attitude to life and has had (and crashed/ had stolen/ rusted away) enough cars to fill a monthly magazine on his own. His editorial team is stacked with experience with the likes of Dave Walker (speciality engine management), of the sadly-missed Car and Car Conversions magazine, David Vizard, the legendary engine tuning guru, and Kevin Leaper (speciality buying cars in pubs) – ex technical editor of Practical Classics. Have a look at the Staff Cars and features to give you a flavour of PPC but for the real thing get along to your local WH Smiths or independent newsagent. PPC is on sale on the last Thursday of every month.
