Mk1 Vw Polo

what do you have an how are you doing it? Cars or trick bits, put your shots up here.

Right well i suppose i better start a build thread for my new 999 contender.

I have purchased a rolling mk1 golf shell for £400 off the great lads at TDC. used to be a nice track car so comes complete with a 6 point cage and a bucket seat
Thanks to them having a 20V turbo head and lots of spares litering there floor they are building me a turbo engine. the reciepts for this although are drastically lower than this to keep it fair i have placed a £200 price on the engine.
Drivet train is an already sorted 16V box.
wheels i would like to run my mag split rims however they are well over budget so will be running a set of compomotive 13x7 rims from a BMW e21 which we have spare. I wont be buying these as just borrowing for event on the promise i refurb them for my flat mate but it can have a cost of £100. tyres are still to be found but i kinda know where some 13" slicks are hiding, worn and past race goodness but perfect for the challenge.
The bergcup arhces and front spoiler come to £250.

this takes me to £950, MOT will cost me £50 and i have a campaign interior to sell from the car still which will gain me some money back for painting the arches and other bits n bobs which im sure i will need.

Once i have seen the car and started pricing properly will list all the costings and some nice pictures of the project

Oh and the metro will continue but i will not be driving it any longer just helping build it

Sounds like a plan but we're not allowed to use slicks. :(

At least not on purpose. ;)

Hi Tommi,

Nice choice, I do like a nice MK1

As Rob says deffo no slicks. Also, even if it costs you less for the engine bits it's still going to be a proffesionally built VAG 1.8T engine by the sound of things. So you need to value it accordingly or at least find an engine c/w ancillaries on ebay or the like (preferably not advertised by mates  ). Just wondering, why would you put a bodykit on a £999 car  Seems like a waste of £250, but maybe you don't have any budget problems?

Good luck with the build :D

It's not a 1.8T as you'd find in an Audi S3 etc, we've just dropped a 20VT head onto his 16v bottom end, and reciepts will reflect parts used, don't worry, all is how it should be!!

the kit will only go on if budget allows but in another sense im building this car for a show at RTTS so may have to demod the car a bit when it comes round to the 999 challenge.

the bodykit is so i can go very wide on the track. once i get the car and start fiddiling around with it.

Thanks foe the offer on the ATS classics but i dont know why but never really liked the styling on them.

As for the profesional engine building i will be doing a lot of the work to minimise costs and like i said above will be using mostly bits from the TDC spares bin. A whole running enigne with loom box and ECU can be picked up from the bay for £400 so a engine built from bits i would equate to half that.
will add up correctly as i go along.

Our calculator is not of the 'magic' variety!!!
Rest assured, it's the spirit of the event that shines through!!

Tommi, i meant you could borrow the classics for the 999 as they have barely legal tread and decent launch ability!

not really sure borrowing is in the spirit of the event or i would borrow a LMP1 toyota v8 from work :)

Im refurbing a set of 13x7 compomotive wheels of bens race car, gold centers and polished lips so will look same as my mag splits, they have an ET of 0, plenty of dish and are shod with 15 yr old dunlop control tyres for classic touring car event. not worth anything but some tyre softner will squidge them up a bit, no e numbers on the tyres but should pass n mot with a bit of luck.

He means the lola B10/11 lmp1 race car with the toyota v8 superGT homologation lump in it....... not sure there gonna let me borrow a 1.5 million pound car to do a 999 event in no matter how much i beg.

They do however have a complete carbon floor from a wrecked car 2 years ago outside which im thinking of stealing and modding to flat floor the bottom of the golf. just needs a few patches n bits.......

decided that berg cup arches are going to have to wait anyway.

have sourced a set of 3 piece split rims of ebay for £200

here is a picture of one of the wheels halfway through the refurb. bought a lovely new sander which is a dream for helping polishing wheels like this

Image

got some tyres to stick on them but the wheels are not wide enough for my liking
new dish's will set me back £300 however im going to look for some second hand ones and see what that gets me for my dollar

picking up the car next weekend, will post some pictures of it then unless mark can take a couple while its at there workshop
