saabinator 2

Postby froggy » Sun Jun 05, 2011 8:04 am

yet another head gasket failure :( i put a fresh one on in april and to be fair its just had constant abuse logging data for boost control :D . there is some blue smoke this time so im hoping no serious damage and may have to drop the sump and have a poke round the innards .

with the 870 injectors and trying to get up to 2 bar boost its well over 500hp and the motor already has 150k on it ,boost will be back to 1.5 bar next time which is just under 500crank hp then concentrate on tuning the vane to move the spool point downwards

Do you think its just the abuse its getting during tuning (i.e. det, poor fueling etc) or is it simply the very large bangs going on for 500+bhp that are doing it? In which case is there much you can do if its the later? What sort of bhp have the saab blocks been pushed to without distorting?

its not det as the ecu deals with it properly and fuel is good from the logs ,i have some programming issues affesting boost control, basically i think my ecu has alzheimers so i upload some new stuff and it pretends to take it then does something else :D

fortunatley this time the gasket took the hit

the yanks are making over 700whp on stock blocks so im not really pushing it

700bhp on a stock 2.3 block

Flash memory does only have so many write cycles it can take but thats normally in the 100,000+ range so I doubt you're getting close to that yet.

Writes do suffer from low voltage or instable supplies. How are you powering the writing kit?

i normally keep the laptop powered up with a mains supply ,im going to tyr bench flashing with a bdm instead as ive had issues with the can bus method before , it is great for live data and logging but not when it comes to programming . luckily i have support from the lads on uk saabs so im not stabbing in the dark .

the head came off in april and i just banged a gasket on as it was a new motor to me but it should have had a skim then ,got a couple of low spots round 1 and 2

A dedicated flash tool is always best if you can. CAN (and other bus methods) can suffer from interruptions and an unsophisticated Flash device usually doesn't like that as it usually needs a continuous uninterrupted stream of data.

its in bits again :(

i think this happened at the same time as the head popped last week and the crack has grown finally letting go yesterday . boost control has been an issue and last week i was going from 1 bar at 4k to 2 bar at 4500 :( which is probably 300-450hp and as there is no evidence of det or any heat related issues must be just too much cylinder pressure

Sadly I can't arsed to blow yet another lump in the quest for 600hp so the saabinator Is being broken to provide bits for my hot rod and free up time to get the kitten running .

Still coming though most likely in the kitten

Noooooooo froggy!! I can see your point though, I'd have given up many head gaskets ago!!

Look forward to seeing the 'Kitten with a Saab up its chuff' in action. Is it getting the big blower or is that off on the hot rod?

Vgt blower is going on the rod so il have to struggle along with the smaller holset and eaton supercharger :lolno: .

1.6 bar on 870cc injectors is near enough 500hp so the top end mapping and boost control is pretty much done so I can concentrate on getting the best from the variable vane side of the turbo .

Can't see the rod being much over 1000kg so 500hp/ ton is plenty

Sad to hear this ones come to an end. Chalk it down as R&D for the rod and the kitten then its all been worthwhile

Is your workshop beginning to look like a B234 boneyard?
