When is next years £999?

PPC's £999 Challenge will be back again at Santa Pod Friday 16th September 2011

Postby fha772 » Mon Sep 19, 2011 12:19 am

Me and Jamie are already planning something a little leftfield for next year.

Just wondered if it was going to be roughly the same time next year or not, so we know how long we've got...

I got something up my sleeve too.

I refuse to miss out a fifth year in a row

£999 in the park? ;)

We do do lap times instead of the handling course.

I like the event in September. It's like a proper end to the Summer and Summer builds are much better than Winter ones (when you can allocate the time). :)

A trackday would be more risky from an accident point of view . . .

The £999 was tried at PPCinthePark and it all went horribly wrong! What would be good is if they kept it as it is, Santa Pod or wherever, but then had a trackday shortly afterwards. Perhaps the £999 and then a road trip to somewhere for the part two. Curborough or Blyton? Keep the event results separate so as not to dilute the ethos of the £999, but keep the party rolling!!

The challenge is more a bit of fun than anything serious.

Pod is a really good venue with definitely the best 1/4 mile in the country.

I think the PPC there is good and then a separate day a curborough or blyton is a good idea.

Its a shame Rockingham is so expensive..........

Close, the idea came to us, after a mate had been talking about 1 of my old daily drivers, and how rapid and driftable it was.
Then, after a bit of googling, it turned out that with a few mods, it could see 13 second 1/4 miles. :wtf:

That's all I'm saying at the minute, let's put it this way, if you wrote a list of 500 cars that you'd enter in the £999, this might not even be on the list.

We need something had a quick look at car racing clubs and only events that would suit us nicely are sprint and hill climb but both these require a MSA liscence which can be tricky to get as one it costs a reasonable amount to do the course and the courses aren't exactly nearby either!!
There are other events these clubs do but these are held on grass or auto test which is fun but requires a different type of car and driving skill which quite frankly I'm not that interested in.
Need more events like in America where we borrow some tarmac put out some cones and then just time how fast we are around the laid out circuit, think they call it auto X out there.

We've been looking at the Toyota Sprint Series, but obviously no good for you if you stick with the Honda. There's only 6 events and most are fairly central. You only need a temporary licence (about £25 I think) and the entry fees aren't bad either. Our V6 MR2 slots nicely into the class C Pro (2ltr+ n/a, with engine swaps allowed) where the main competition is all FWD

Practical Performance Car (PPC) magazine, a monthly publication aimed at real car enthusiasts, with real-world cars. At PPC we pride ourselves in providing the most entertaining, informative and inspiring features for petrolheads everywhere. Each month we feature an eclectic mix of affordable performance cars, great driving adventures and world-class technical features for the DIY tuner.

Everyone who works on the magazine is a dyed-in-the-wool car enthusiast and this is reflected in the cars we drive and the topics we write about. Whether it be fast road, track-day or grass roots motorsport you’ll find it in PPC. Our editorial team is headed up by well known editor Will Holman. Will has a deserved reputation for his ’stick a V8 under the bonnet’ attitude to life and has had (and crashed/ had stolen/ rusted away) enough cars to fill a monthly magazine on his own. His editorial team is stacked with experience with the likes of Dave Walker (speciality engine management), of the sadly-missed Car and Car Conversions magazine, David Vizard, the legendary engine tuning guru, and Kevin Leaper (speciality buying cars in pubs) – ex technical editor of Practical Classics. Have a look at the Staff Cars and features to give you a flavour of PPC but for the real thing get along to your local WH Smiths or independent newsagent. PPC is on sale on the last Thursday of every month.
