Daf 44 classic modifieds racer in primer

what do you have an how are you doing it? Cars or trick bits, put your shots up here.

Postby stefan » Sat Dec 10, 2011 4:31 pm

This is my build of a classic modifieds race car, a Daf 66 on a Reliant Scimitar chassis, the car will look like a Daf 44 when finished, These posts are a copy of the ones on the classis modifieds forum to bring you upto date

Stripped out the engine and rolled it on its side for all the running gear to be removed, trim and glass already out.

If anyone on here knows Dafs, not that likely I know you will realise that this is a later Daf 66 shell and not a 44, The shells are the same from the A piller back and I have all the early panels for the front exept the front wings which are available in GRP anyway so it will be a 44 when it hits the track.

Hope to do some more work on Friday night to it maybe get it to an empty shell.

Stripped rest of running gear

then started cutting

photos come out a little dark in the garage.

Hope to do a bit more over the weekend.

Well the shell is now cut out it will just need detail trimming when the chassis is here :cheese:

Had a Scimitar lined up but the owner has now backed out of the deal so got to look for another one of those now, got out bid on one on Ebay this morning ;frown:

Also found out that the Matiz has 13" wheels in 4 x 114.3 flavor so I can use them intead of adaptors, will help with the width with the daf being a small car. Allegro also has 13" 4x 114.3 wheels as well.

Will order my tyres next week I think.

Well I collected my new to me pipe bender today and next saturday I will be picking this up
Image

progress is slow but steady.

I have also picked up some 114.7 x 4 13 inch wheels from an old Datsun pick up truck so have got to send them off for banding then blasting.

Tube notcher was delivered on tuesday as well

Slicks are here

Chassis stripped ready for building

Who would have thought a fibreglass car could rot so much
Image

drivers side front out rigger
Image

drivers side rear out rigger
Image

rear of chassis over tank
Image

pessenger side front out rigger
Image

and the power house complete with full stainless exhaust
Image

plenty of welding to do, most of the very rotten bits would have to be cut off anyway so not as bad as it looks

well of to the pub soon for some beer

well done abit more today.

chassis chopped
Image

and tacked togeather ready for a messure up
Image
Image

also got some time to go to the steel stockest, 1.5mm plate, 4mm plateand some 34mm tube with a wall thickness of 3.4mm, 18m of it
Image

just need to adjust the drivers side abit it seems to be 6mm longer than the passenger side

Well I was ment to be working thismorning but I had my roof ladder stollen on thursday night so could not do the job :x  ;frown: :x

but on the plus side me and the mate I should have been working with went in the garage and did this :cheese: :cheese:

All out rigers made and welded from top, mate in photo
Image
Image
Image

engine out, needs to be moved forward 7", nice
Image

chassis rolled on its side and started welding the underside
Image
Image

As for the welder forgot I had this tucked away in the front garage, paid £100 for it about 9 years ago so we adapted it to use the small reals of wire that I have and away we went.
Image

All out riggers and side rails are made of 70mm box with a 3mm wall so nice and stronge to fit the gage to. Also made the triangulation bits for the trailing arms out of the same stuff, god its heavy even without the engine in, time for some coffee I think

Ok here we go again, most of the family out this morning and early afternoon so escaped to the garage.

Finished the welding on the underside
Image

Final trimming of the shell
Image
Image

then put it on the chassis, fitts quite well
Image

Image
Image

and inside
Image
Image

sterating to look like a car again

Well got some slicks on fronts do not clear the calipers so need spacers or smaller caliper will have to have a think about the way to go.

Put the bonnet on to see how it fits, due to hight of the engine and having to lift it a bit the dizzy cap is close but angled HT leeds will sort that. Problem is the alternator is to high and hits the bonnet, only allowed a hole in the bonnet for the air filter so will have to try and move it instead.

Wow thats a serious undertaking, very impressive! Particularly the entire new floor that you've put in, I bet that took some thinking out.

Welcome to the forum.

I love this race series. Although I'd be tempted to put the lights and windows back just to see the look on the M.O.T mans face. ;)
