Oddball trackday car

wild car/engine combo's? grab a badgers milk and a jaffa then tell the gang here

My dads mates used to build them for a living look abit strange but I like them.
A scooby flat 4 would be a right laugh in one with no roof canopy and fiat coupe front lights fit

Speaking of oddball trackday cars how about most unlikely trackday cars like the van that was at PPC in the Park last year.

My thought - A Ford Galaxy. Not very PPC I hear you say but think about it - the seats alone weigh nearly a ton and as they're mostly unclipable simply unclip and leave behind. Instead use the space to lug spare tyres and tools to the venue. The Galaxy came with a V6 option (was this duratec or the VAG VR thing?) as well as the VAG 1.9TDI. This should give plenty of options from tuning whats there to fitting something more fruity - the VAG 1.8T is a good option with plenty of grunt. Going the whole hog you could probably fit the 4wd from a tired Passat 4Motion or the 2.5T from the Focus ST.

To complete the look, take photos of your family, blow them up to life size, cut out and stick them on the inside of the (polycarbonate) windows. To create the maximum effect make them pose in a wave and smile for the photos :D

I think it came with the VW VR6.

Maybe a Sharan or Alhambra? The Seat version might be cheaper?

You're probably right - if ever there was an example of people paying for a badge

Anyway the idea I'd be hoping for these expressions from the drivers you pass on a track day - :? :wtf:  :o

I nearly bought a VR6 Galaxy a couple of years ago for the £999, but then I got the 328i for £200, before the auction ended, the Galaxy only went for £260, and it was very tidy, and low miles, I went to view it at Sheffield.
I still think 1 would make a good, surprising track car, so long as you can get the weight out of it.

My Dad used to have one and the seats were enormously heavy items, maybe 35kg each. The whole car was about 1700kg, that was the diesel. So ripping out those 5 seats would have it down to below 1550.

I'm sure there is a lot of strengthening put into the floor so the seats can clip in so that lot removed plus polycarb windows and it could be down to about 1400. Bonnet is a nice flat shape so an ally panel one shouldn't be too difficult to make either.

A turbo on the vr6 would make it fun .
Not sure how to make it handle
But would be worth a try .

Everyone who works on the magazine is a dyed-in-the-wool car enthusiast and this is reflected in the cars we drive and the topics we write about. Whether it be fast road, track-day or grass roots motorsport you’ll find it in PPC. Our editorial team is headed up by well known editor Will Holman. Will has a deserved reputation for his ’stick a V8 under the bonnet’ attitude to life and has had (and crashed/ had stolen/ rusted away) enough cars to fill a monthly magazine on his own. His editorial team is stacked with experience with the likes of Dave Walker (speciality engine management), of the sadly-missed Car and Car Conversions magazine, David Vizard, the legendary engine tuning guru, and Kevin Leaper (speciality buying cars in pubs) – ex technical editor of Practical Classics. Have a look at the Staff Cars and features to give you a flavour of PPC but for the real thing get along to your local WH Smiths or independent newsagent. PPC is on sale on the last Thursday of every month.
