Sounds like a plan £700 would be the £699 I have left at least. :)

Going back abit:

8 valves + snapped cambelt = nooo problemo.

16 valves + snapped cambelt = buggered.

Oh, I want a Panda.

I swear those fire engines are over engineered .
Would a turbo go on that engine with a decomp plate to keep costs down.

Easily. ;)

Van Aaken developments used to sell them for about £60 so the Cinquecento conversion would make 100bhp reliably.

Yesterday I did some proper shopping (well eBay at least) and bought a set of Punto Sporting wheels for £67.13.

Test fitted with the locking bolts supplied...

Image|http://thumbsnap.com/bDu8Vvdz

...50mm clear of the arches and plenty of room for the bigger brakes and/or spacers. Contrasting black to go with the bumpers and roof. Not going for silly paint this time. :( Going for stealth. ;)

A bit close to the handbrake cable though.

On the tuning front, the chap who I bought the wheels from has a complete 16V Punto Sporting that's okay apart from the head gasket. I'm thinking the 1242cc block with an 1108cc 8V head will have low enough compression to run a turbo. Can I get the block for less than it would cost to either buy or make a decompression plate?

I've not got a price from Van Aaken yet so...

Two head gaskets and longer stretch bolts £50-£60
3mm-6mm Aluminium plate (depending on tolerances and I haven't done the sums yet). £20-£35
A day with a pillar drill, jigsaw and frapwheel - free.

So if I can get the whole engine for say £100 and sell the head I'd be on easy street and not need to worry about basically starting from scratch.

Having said that. The 1242 block will need a new sump gasket so I can clean all the sludge out and check the crank bearings for damage, Head gasket, various cleaning products (a couple of cans of WD40 to get sludge out of the oil channels and pick up lines, oil pump rebuild kit (or new pump due to sludge/water damage) and that's without looking at the thing properly.

Rock or hard place? Either will be pushing it for the end of the month.

I am currently the highest bidder on a Seicento engine for 99p. So even if the Seicento is completely Muller'd I can swap lumps instead of faffing about (fit the new belts and adjuster before I fit the new engine). If the engine isn't knackered I'll have a spare one to act as a bench platform. Making experimenting a lot easier out of the car and either way a five speed box for the Panda so I can have a quieter and more fuel efficient commute. Win-Win. ;)

Realistically my aim is to have a five speed Panda with a bit of tuning (exhaust and balanced carb')in time for the RWYB day.

Rob whats wrong with the 16V head on the 1242 block? Surely it'd be better than the 8v as a starting point even if it needs a little skim? Then bike carbs and freeflow exhaust job-jobbed.

Will the Sporting head run with a distributor?

The Seicento was delivered while I was at work today and first impressions are favorable. The engine turns over without making any tapping noises so I'm willing to bet the valves are safe. The drivers side light doesn't work, rear wiper is dead, there's a crack in the the bumper and dent in the tailgate where I'd guess the car has reversed into a post at some point.

Good tyres, decent CD player and all round a nice little car.

Quick turn around it is then. ;)

A few thoughts

The 16v head will not take a dizzy.
The fire engines do not use a sump gasket, its just a touch of liquid gasket.
Dont waste your time porting a 16v head, the best anyone has ever done is a 0.3% flow increase :o and is very easy to break into the water ways.
The quick mod for low compresion for the 1242 8v turbo conversions is to fit the 16v pistions. You may be able to swop the 16v head for the 8v but I've a feeling somewhere that the oil ways are slightly different!

The cing gearbox is not a staight swop into the panda, it requires custom mounts, gearlinkage and driveshafts. If you have done this before then no problem, its all doable, just a heads up. We just fit the 5 speed panda box, its a lot quicker

Now if you realy want to go high boost turbo you have all the engine internal parts you need. Take the crank out of your 999cc panda engine and drop it into the 1108cc cinq engine. You will end up with a low compresion 999cc engine with a super strong block:twisted:

Van Aaken went into administration, however I have some specs on their FIRE turbo conversions:

*Garrett GT15 turbo
*8.5:1 compression ratio
*0.6 bar boost
*Intercooled
*Clio oil filter, Bosch #P3233
*bosch Super 4 spark plugs, FR78X
*10W40 semi-synthetic oil

I have a parts list too, but can't be bothered to write it all up.

They claimed 102bhp and 148nm.
