Freelander TD4 power upgrade
In the Freelander the engine puts out about 120bhp. The later 4 pot lump powers the E90 BMW 320TD at around 180bhp and can be tweeked and chipped up to about 200bhp. With that upgrade the little freelandy will be less of a tractor and more of a sensible but lively little mudhopper.
Is anyone out there familar with the BMW oiler engines and can tell me what I will need if I'm gonna make it fit? Clearly I'll need the bigger turbo and some creative repiping but how about other bits? Fuel pump, injectors, internal components...
Any thoughts or directions gratefully accepted.

Me neither but, its the family bus so economy is the order of the day. I do like the idea of a V8 freelandy tho... that would be real fun until it fell over on a roundabout!

Probably a degree in software engineering! I can't imagine the latest BMW engines are easy donors with lots of electrical things to impede you, and I haven't seen many standalone aftermarket diesel ecus.

Except the injectors will be driven in quite a fancy way, typically 5 or 7 injections per combustion. Thats a lot more than the older diesels which only managed 1-3 or even only one. Thats where a lot of the smoothness and economy comes from.

Its only an extra bit of boost so as long as I get a bit more juice in the flow the power will come.
Anyone know where the info is available?
Maybe I'll just whack the bigger turbo on and see what happens.
...or maybe just grab an E90 lump and play "spot the difference"

Swap the annoying electronic VP37 Bosch pump, for an older VE (from a Rover 220SD) - direct swap on the mechanical side, and if you wire up the exceptionally simple 220SD ECU, you'll get the nice electronic advance setup. Very few wires needed for this.
Standard turbo is good for about 150Bhp, for bit of work, you can make a GT2256v turbo fit (VNT, boost can start at about 1700rpm, and with massive amounts of top-end flow!) A non-freelander style exhaust manifold is needed to stop the bigger turbo blowing the head off from excessive exhaust manifold pressure (EMP - a big issue on tuned dervs) and then it's just an extension bolted onto that, to relocate the turbo.
The stock pump + injectors will flow upto around 160Bhp - at this point you need to swap the injector nozzles to Freelander 300TDi items, to get yourself well over 200Bhp, and in excess of 350lb/ft of torque.... enough to destroy the gearbox in a very short amount of time
Yes.. it's excessive.. but hey, this is PPC - why should I give subtle options? :p
PS:I own the smaller 220SD, the lowest-power version made... All of the above is in my plan. Well...apart from having it 4wd, lol

I was hoping to do it using BMW bits straight out of the box. Technically it is do-able I think the stumbling block really is the ECU - unless I can work out how to use the BMW immobiliser setup and the later ECU.
Oh well, anyone familiar with the Motronic immobilisers?

Linkys?
Simtek Bodylogic setup
Not cheap at around £3k for the ECU setup, but can be setup to run a common rail diesel of choice, the Land Rover variety of the TDV6 being the choice for their demonstrator.

I take it you mean Defender / Discovery 300Tdi injectors? (Tdi was never fitted to Freelanders ... at least not by factory
Didn't realise they (the injectors - not a Tdi; that would be a challenge
Hmmmm
To continue the 'parts bin engineering theme', can anyone confirm if L Series & Land Rover Td5 pistons are the same?
{edited for spooling!}
