After WWII it was the only real mass production V12 (until the Merc, Beemer ones of the late eighties/early nineties), we're lucky to have a relative plethora is this country. Various regulations will mean that engines like this are a thing of history, we'll no doubt only get smaller turbo'd mills in future.
They are dying off very quickly now though, sad. I was just reading the other day that E Types now out number XJ40's...
