No need. A Hoyle rear end (IRS conversion) and coilover set up taking care of the front end; with an MX5 engine, gearbox and a recoprop special. The car would handle just as well if not better than the donor Mazda and you won't need any chassis alteration avoiding the IVA SAV tax as well.

With shed box MX5's making fair money now due to Se7en replica bandwagon discovering it's a useful donor vehicle. I'd start looking elsewhere or get in while the going's good. Have a look for a BMW 318 those things are bomb proof. ;)

I've always thought that the MGB should have a bigger engine in it and old jags are cheap - how about XJ8 running gear? I know its auto but that give more room for the transmission tunnel :D

Power better than an RV8 and thats with jaguar whisper exhausts 8)

Funny you should say that as I've a supercharged Jag V8 sitting next to a MGB shell that are saying the same thing.

The rubber bumper tunnel was big enough for the 200SX gearbox I had in mine and the LT box Costello used. ;)

You'd need a kit car pedal box with either no servo or a remote one for the supercharger but there's no reason (apart from that engine belongs in your E-Type) that it wouldn't work.

Kev does not need encouragement in the area. He is more than capable of avoiding the E-Type and various RWD Escorts on his own.

I've been thinking about MG B's again. How about a 21st century V8 conversion?

Rocking horse poo rare manual 540 V8.

That would be a shame to use that, rare for the manual and super rare for being a big engined manual touring!

I'd go for the Jag V8, plenty kicking about in the super cheap category, even though they're all autos that might not be a bad thing, it would make it into a giant go-kart. Besides buy a whole XJ and use the leather seats too!

I think I might have found an new project for after the midget 8)

Hey Will', get your tape measure and grinder out and drop your Midget body on this chassis...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mazda-mx5-kit ... 636wt_1374

...that way you don't need to worry about the IVA/SVA/MGOC/DVLA/RSVP/DISCO because you can use donor chassis identity as it's technically a reshell. ;)

Come to think of it; if you were to weld a couple of outriggers to that chassis (or bolt some on for the DVLA points) you can pretty much put any body you want on it.

How about a Lotus Elan body on a Lotus Elan replica chassis?

I recon a Spitfire body would be fairly straight forward as well.

£200 eh? Hmmmmmm......

Rob that isn't a chassis. Its a drive train, suspension and some subframes. The car identify is tied to the shell VIN number which isn't there. It has no part recognised by the DVLA other than an engine number.

but that would be a nice kit to fit to an MGB, could probably reuse about half of it.

I had similar thoughts when I was under my jag the other day - its got a front and rear subframe, the rear is entirely self contained bar the spring turrets, the front would need wishbone mounts and spring turrents. But it has bolt on front hubs so you could throw out the front subframe and do a hybrid with the MGB front and a new upright. The wheels are also standard Mondeo 5 stud pattern so that opens up the wheel options too. Once the Midget is on the road a fully modernised MGBGT (for the boot space of course) does sound very tempting.

There's a chap down cambridge way doing something like this... MX5 running gear in a Midget body. Its a lot of work, but should end up a lot lighter than the MX5 and a lot more powerful than the Midget was... Should appear later in the summer if its still progressing as fast as it was.

Russell.
