After the wifes first camping experience on the Northumberland coast last week, despite dubious weather, she gave the thumbs up for future expeditions :wtf: Although she wasn't too keen on the tent, which to be fair has mainly been used by sweaty pissed up blokes at various race circuits across the UK and Europe, and would like a bit more 'luxury'. I'm not ready for the full on caravan experience and a motorhome makes no sense when I've got a company 4x4 with a fuel card. So, in true tight arsed Yorkshire fashion I thought this would make a good starting point to 'camping off the ground'-

Just like this-

Canadian apparently and decent quality 'back in the day'. Sleeps 5-6, believe it or not  It's proper Retro and only cost me £300!! It's construction is both ingenious and hilarious in equal measures :lolno:

I'm not quite sure why they didn't take off a bit better. You see these massive 7 berth things rolling around the size of a bungalow sucking every last ounce of torque from the Korean thing towing it but here you have something that expands to 3 times its original size so can be moved with ease.

It is a bit of a faff to put it up, but probably only 15-20mins for 2 of you once you get the hang of it. I towed it 140miles home on M1 at 70mph all the way and didn't even know it was there. Would've gone quicker but I didn't know how good the tyres/bearings etc were

My brother gave me a trailer tent. It was so good, I left it in a skip at Harrogate Kit Car Show. I inherited another one off him a few years later. I pulled the chassis off it to make a bike trailer and mounted the rest on the roof of my Discovery. It was ace. Although a fat bloke clambering around 7' in the sky on the roof of a bouncy truck......seasick.

Awesome!

You should pimp that out with crazy neon lights and a weird sound system, then park it in some field somewhere over night, ideally a few 100m down hill from a busy pub. :D

There'd be some funny news stories in the morning

It's an oldie but a goody :D Which 'Bay would that be mate? Robin Hoods or Whit'Bay? The world's our oyster now, we'll be 'living the dream'
One of the reasons it was so cheap was that the winding mechanism wasn't ratcheting anymore so a previous owner drilled the 4 corner supports and pushed in pins once up. This made it awkward to erect, especially on your own. I noticed this morning an extra post next to the winder. It had a small hole through it, so I stuck in a small allen key and gave it a 1/4 turn - hey presto, all locked up :D Just need to adjust all 4 cables so it rises evenly now.

We don't like to encourage folks to Robin Hoods Bay because they keep coming back but it has a plethora of good pubs, a beach and a chippy.

Practical Performance Car (PPC) magazine, a monthly publication aimed at real car enthusiasts, with real-world cars. At PPC we pride ourselves in providing the most entertaining, informative and inspiring features for petrolheads everywhere. Each month we feature an eclectic mix of affordable performance cars, great driving adventures and world-class technical features for the DIY tuner.

Everyone who works on the magazine is a dyed-in-the-wool car enthusiast and this is reflected in the cars we drive and the topics we write about. Whether it be fast road, track-day or grass roots motorsport you’ll find it in PPC. Our editorial team is headed up by well known editor Will Holman. Will has a deserved reputation for his ’stick a V8 under the bonnet’ attitude to life and has had (and crashed/ had stolen/ rusted away) enough cars to fill a monthly magazine on his own. His editorial team is stacked with experience with the likes of Dave Walker (speciality engine management), of the sadly-missed Car and Car Conversions magazine, David Vizard, the legendary engine tuning guru, and Kevin Leaper (speciality buying cars in pubs) – ex technical editor of Practical Classics. Have a look at the Staff Cars and features to give you a flavour of PPC but for the real thing get along to your local WH Smiths or independent newsagent. PPC is on sale on the last Thursday of every month.
