Discovery LWB

wild car/engine combo's? grab a badgers milk and a jaffa then tell the gang here

Postby ACE » Wed Jul 11, 2012 8:17 pm

Discovery series 1's can still be found pretty cheap, not like they were, but with careful looking, they are out there.
Get one with chassis rot.
Buy a brand new galvanized chassis, but have it made with a 125 inch wheel base.
Chop body shell in half, fit front to the front end of the chassis, the back to the back, fill the gap, fit Defender 130 rear prop.

Replacement for Kevin Leaper's Range Rover Classic, as the PPC parts chaser/tow truck?

Or buy this...
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Range-Rover-c ... 27c8ec552c

Btw, I suspect this is a converted fire engine, despite what the seller states, Carmichael marketed it's estates as Clansman, Commando's are all fire engines (afaik).
The missing history might explain this, a call to Carmichael themselves (quoting the Job no.) might confirm/contradict this.

Amdac Carmichael...

Fax: 01905 420120

Carmichael Support Services Ltd
Tel: 01905 748660 or 748661
Fax: 01905 748662
Or bang on the door @ Amdac Carmichael, Weir Lane, Worcester, WR2 4AY.
(Come off the Bromwich Road (A449) along Weir Lane, past the houses and into the industrial estate, past Travis Perkins on your left, take the next right (still Weir Lane, sounds odd but you'll see when you get there), Amdac Carmichael is on your right. If you get to the Worcester Citizens Swimming Pool, you've gone too far.)

Fingers crossed for a Lottery win ... probably means I need "to be in it to win it" though

Very nice car, if not a little pointless.

Also, you'll be doing well to find a Disco I with a good body and rotton chassis, it's usually the other way round.
I fancy the idea of the front half of a Disco and a 130 HiCap pickup body to make a more comfortable double cab pickup that looks better than the Japenese stuff.

"Longranger 4x4" conversion or back end of a Mazda pickup cab grafted on
(some of the "flat plate & filler" jobs to close the cab off spoil the Disco's lines imho - though I probably need to finish one of my Landy projects to qualify for an opinion  )

I'm sure you could adapt a Disco' to make something different. If you're after a long wheel base Discovery though why only use four wheels?

There was a web site for the 6x6 disco hybrid, but I can't find it - I think it's gone.

Apparently I know nothing, a good trawl of the net turned up this...
This was built by Carmichaels as a '6x4 Custom Car' for a company called R.B.K. Ltd. Order dated January 1979.

Just noticed that somebody has added this to the eBay page...
This vehicle was ordered from Carmichaels in January 1979 by a company called RBK Ltd.

Did who buy it?
I didn't, no monies. Plus I'm not sure I'd really want to live with it, if I'm honest.

Have the highways agency taken in all the roads? There seem to be a lot of mud plugging ideas running around atm.

No, just so many pot holes in the roads, you pretty much need an offroader to drive the queens highway.

Good wading capability can be useful too sometimes.

Oh, and remember the snow the last few winters? (that's down to global warming, apparently)

Practical Performance Car (PPC) magazine, a monthly publication aimed at real car enthusiasts, with real-world cars. At PPC we pride ourselves in providing the most entertaining, informative and inspiring features for petrolheads everywhere. Each month we feature an eclectic mix of affordable performance cars, great driving adventures and world-class technical features for the DIY tuner.

Everyone who works on the magazine is a dyed-in-the-wool car enthusiast and this is reflected in the cars we drive and the topics we write about. Whether it be fast road, track-day or grass roots motorsport you’ll find it in PPC. Our editorial team is headed up by well known editor Will Holman. Will has a deserved reputation for his ’stick a V8 under the bonnet’ attitude to life and has had (and crashed/ had stolen/ rusted away) enough cars to fill a monthly magazine on his own. His editorial team is stacked with experience with the likes of Dave Walker (speciality engine management), of the sadly-missed Car and Car Conversions magazine, David Vizard, the legendary engine tuning guru, and Kevin Leaper (speciality buying cars in pubs) – ex technical editor of Practical Classics. Have a look at the Staff Cars and features to give you a flavour of PPC but for the real thing get along to your local WH Smiths or independent newsagent. PPC is on sale on the last Thursday of every month.
