What can you buy for £999 - ideas thread

Its back for another year, who or what will take the crown this year, at a new venue SANTA POD

Postby Fooser » Thu Oct 01, 2009 7:26 am

Thought i would start a thread to show cars for sale with potential. May help to provide inspiration on what can be had for less than 1k

Thought i would start it off with a soarer (you may have noticed i like soarers).

A v8 with broken air suspension - should fetch about £500. Strap some coil overs, on it put it on a diet sell that tv screen and spend any remaining money on nos. Hello 350bhp. Fantastic just so long as the 2010 challenge does not involve stopping or turning.[:D]

There's a lovely little Hondary thing for sale on my way to work. It looks like a CRX of some sort. Sign says £1000ono. It looks fast and nimble but if it isn't, sell stuff off it and make it so.

Ooo I love this kind of misty eyed dreaming thread [:D]

First up as I always suggest MR2! mk1s and mk2s are cheap enough and go well enough stock, just get one with a little bit of ticket as they do like their rust. strap on some nos for the drag, the middyness will sort out any track section [8D]

Other obvious suggestions:
Reliant Kitten, but V8 it with the PPC hated RV8! done to death so should be well documented, both can be picked up for peanuts too os bit of elbow grease and you have a 170+Bhp wheelspin machine.

Fiesta 1.6 Zetec S. Nice modern 1.6L (100ish stock bhp), still had the older, lighter better handling chassis, easily stripped to get it lighter, can be picked up for about £600 in good nick. Plenty around so I won't list those for sale.

XJS? Manual 3.6, jag engines respond well to free flowing exhaust and inlets, a lot of the tuners reckon for similar money you can get as much power out of the 4.0 as you can the V12. Plus Jags are always cool. [8D]

Posche 944?

Theres a Porsche 924 a street away from mine that has been sat on flat tyres with plants growing up it now for over 3 years now. I offered them £150 for it 2 years ago but they wouldn't take it, thanks to credit crunch they might now. What with it being an 80s one (D reg) it'll be galvanised so minimal rust so maybe just needs the engine swapping for something grunty.

You buy a Fiesta 1.6 Si and a knackered Mondeo 2ltr. Put the 2 ltr engine into the Si and you have a fast, excellent handling hot hatch for potentially less than £500. Then you spend the rest on mods such as tyres, brakes etc.

I might have had a look if it was a bit closer. You need to check these for rot everywhere before buying...don't ask how I know [:I]

This is the best bit of the of the thing if you ask me!

Liking the Quattro but Autotrader says it only has 150bhp? Def think 4wd is the way to go.

Yeah definitely after the washout in the morning at Curborough.

Something like one of these would be ideal:
Legacy 2L turbo 4wd

Impreza WRX

Good finds! That WRX is a bargain. Question is, will a grand's worth of Scooby take the day's abuse?! Would be fun to find out

Also seen various shabby T5 estates for under a grand. Never going to be much of a contender but what a blast! Saw one with a 300bhp RICA chip recently 8)

I think the main worry with that WRX is does it actually have a wrx engine in there or is it a case of stick on badges?

There was a T5 at the 2nd 999 at York. Went like a rocket with the right tyres on, until it popped spectacularly halfway down the quarter...
