I know it's early days but the cogs are whirring already for next years £999

Just been offered a MK1 MR2 already on decent coilovers for £400. These are 200kg lighter than the MK2 as std weighing about 1000kg fully loaded. So it shouldn't be too hard to get it down to 8-900kg, depending which engine we decide to put in it.

Engine choice are-
1. 2.0 n/a 3SGE (Rev3 on) 170BHPish with loadsa revs :D
2. 2.0 turbo 3SGTE (Rev1/2) 280BHPish with boost tweaks
3. 3.0 V6 3vzfe 200BHP with loadsa torque

I'm tempted to go the simplest (and cheapest, usually about £100-150) option of the 2.0 n/a. A 1/4 mile calculator shows that a sub 900kg MR2 should be good for a sub 14s time with 170bhp. Leaving us in with a shout on the handling course as the MK1 should be nimbler than this years MK2 on similar suspension.

Saying that, the Turbo lump will go in just as easy and I think I know where I can get a good 'un for under £400. The 3SGTE should be good for about 280bhp with the boost raised. I fully expect a bigger turnout of the 4WD turbo brigade next year, but I think the only way they'll beat a good MK1 Turbo is if it rains on the day as it should be good for a 12s 1/4!! :D

The 3.0 V6 is an option (again) but does involve a fair bit more work and relies on us finding an engine at the right price again.

I think if the car and Turbo engine package can be had for less than £800 then it's just got to be done

you've done the V6, and a great job it was too!
A boosted mk1 would be a flier!!! ive seen a supercharged 4AGE mk1 and that was no slouch, so a 3SGTE would be very, very quick, 300bhp/ton! that'll do nicely!
if you can get it in budget, then game on boys!!

*im surprised the mk1 weighs a ton stock! although jap tin seems to be quite heavy duty on the sport models, so would explain alot

The V6 will fit, it's just a bit more work in the MK1 and I've already done one
It's all still in the balance at the moment. I've got to decide whether to do the £999 again or run the MR2 V6 in the Toyota Sprint Series next year  I can't justify doing both and after a cracking trackday at Blyton today I'm leaning towards the TSS.

The interior is surprisingly heavy on a mk1. Strip it down, single skin the panels, lose the sunroof and chop off all the bracketry you don't need and you'll get the weight down to about 800kgs. And the doors. Gut the door and replace the windows with plastic and you'll save a massive chunk of weight right there.

Or cut all the rust out and don't replace it and you'll be down to 400kgs with no worries

Buy that V8 Lexus LS400 and rape the engine from it as those V8s are all ally and its a Toyota so the box may mate up. Supposedly theyer 300bhp ish.

A V8 mk1 MR2 would be cool, minimal exhausts for the muted V8 to sound like it should, sounds like a winner...... if you can cram it all in!!!

A V8 would sound great but the only way to fit it in is longitudaly (is that right? ) as per the Woodsport MK1 Audi V8 onto a transaxle. A massive amount of work and why when a 3SGTE can do 300bhp easily with a few tweaks

Dosent have V8 noise, with minimal tweeks the V8 will do 400bhp. Supposedly they were under quoted at 300bhp and are actually usually 330bhp, plop some de-cats on it and a 4 barrel carb and theres gotta be almost 400bhp there.

Then maybe steal a large merc/jag supercharger and see how the ECU handles boost.

 i'm not surprised it wont fit tbh, the V6 looks a tight squeeze, im sure an XJR Jag supercharger could be grafted on somehow, drop the CR a bit and that'll be a serious motor....... s/charged V6 mid-engine, reardrive, it'll be an NSX with boost!!!! wow, even without boost, typing the spec felt like i was on about a Stratos or Ferrari Dino..... thats what ya built TTW, a jap dino!!! Epic!

TTW, good idea, dont do the 999 this year, go sprinting instead!!!! lol, i just bought a Punto GT, 1.4 turbo for 650 quid, and i want to win this year, if the electrical fault is fixed easily, theres plenty to sell off and then enough beer tokens to get boosted and handle well...... and diet!

Wasn't that Toyota's answer to Group B before it was all binned? a 4wd 2L Turbo mid engine beast with some vague resemblance to an MR2?
