This months Volvo feature car got me thinking about an S/V40 for the challenge. Apparently they can be tweaked up to 18psi without any need to 'crack into' the ECU. Lose some weight, lowered springs, sticky tyres should make a potent weapon :think:

Stock T4 200bhp would be an improvement over the Renault/Volvo 480 lump. Lighter, better built (than the Renault engine), more reliable and a solid base for improvement. 200bhp out of the Renvo (?) engine is easy if you like rebuilding it every few months.

It wouldn't be a bad choice but having seen how some of the barges did on the handling course I'd be happy to take a 3ft shorter wheelbase and 50bhp less, you'll more than make up any lost time on the 1/4. You can save 3s on the handling course with a nippier car and a little practice, getting a 16s car down to 13s is a tall order. Safe bet is a Puma 1.7 with a low blow turbo, I'm slightly surprised no one has done it yet.

I don't think the S40 is quite as barge like as it appears, weighing in at 'only' 1255kg. Or, the same as a Mk2 MR2 :wink:

As std with 200bhp it should do a 15.0s 1/4. Tweaked from 10psi to 18psi it should get into the 13s, and with some decent weight loss and the right tyres it could get into the 12s. Give it some stiffer suspenders, stick tyres and a decent driver for the handling course and it could be in with a shout

Ok so lets call the SW20 MR2 the benchmark, seeing as it won the handling course by a country mile last year and was only 2nd in 2010 to the rally legend that is the GT4.

Here's the figures for comparison-

MR2
Length 4180 mm
Width 1700 mm
Weight 1285 kg
Wheelbase 2400mm

S40
Length 4516 mm
Width 1716 mm
Weight 1255 kg
Wheelbase 2562 mm

Nothing to chose between them in weight or width. Only 16cm difference in the wheelbase. Yes the Volvo has more overhang but that's not going to have much affect on the handling. The MR2's always going to change direction quicker with its light front end and put the power down better with the engine over the rear wheels. But I still reckon a well sorted Volvo may actually beat it overall :shock:
